Mounjao vs Wegovy for weight loss

What is Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is an injectable medication that the NHS prescribes to treat patients with type 2 diabetes. However, it has recently been approved by the MHRA for weight loss and weight management.  Mounjaro is most effective when used alongside a healthy diet and regular physical activity. We have some helpful guides that explain the ins and outs of Mounjaro including side effects and healthy doses of Mounjaro.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is also an injectable medication that is also licensed for weight management and weight loss.  Again, it should be used alongside a healthy diet and exercise. This is available on prescription through the NHS, and private clinics. We have some helpful information on Wegovy, including dosage, side effects and how to make the most of your treatment.

What’s the difference between Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Although Mounjaro and Wegovy have very similar effects on the body, there are some differences that we will outline here.

Mounjaro is a type 2 diabetes medication, which is now licensed for weight loss.  The active ingredient, tirzepatide,  reduces appetite and makes you feel more full. Tirzepatide mimics the gut hormones GLP1 and GIP. These hormones send signals to the brain to tell you that you are full. They also slow down your digestive system, meaning it takes longer to break down food and empty the stomach.

Wegovy is a weight loss medication with the active ingredient semaglutide. Unlike Mounjaro, semaglutide only mimics GLP1. It is still very effective. Like Mounjaro, it suppresses your appetite and slows down your digestive system, making you feel full, meaning you eat fewer calories and therefore lose weight.
Clinical trials have shown that Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is more effective than Wegovy (semaglutide). However, patients who use Mounjaro may experience more intense side effects than s Wegovy. The side effects of each drug do lessen once your body has gotten used to the medication. They tend to be experienced for a couple of days after each dose increase. There are things that you can do to help manage the side effects of both Mounjaro and Wegovy. You can view the side effects of Mounjaro here. You can also view the potential side effects of Wegovy.

Is Mounjaro or Wegovy more effective for weight loss?

Mounjaro may be more effective for weight loss than Wegovy; this has been shown in multiple studies. But Wegovy is still a very effective treatment. It all comes down to personal preference and individual experiences with each medication.

At myBMI, we can offer medications to help treat side effects as part of your monthly plan. Knowing that side effects can be managed broadens your options for your weight loss method.
