Wegovy tablets dosages

Wegovy tablets are an oral alternative to Wegovy injections, making them much more convenient for people who don’t like needles. While Wegovy tablets aren’t available in the UK just yet, we expect them to be approved later in 2026.

They contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient as Wegovy injections, and can help you manage your blood sugar and regulate your appetite.

If you want to switch from weight loss injections to Wegovy tablets or are considering the benefits of weight loss medication in general, you might be wondering what dose you need. That’s why we’ve put together this helpful Wegovy tablets dosage guide to get you started.

Key points

  • Wegovy tablets are an oral form of Wegovy injections, containing the same active ingredient. semaglutide.
  • During clinical trials, Wegovy tablets came in doses of 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg.
  • If you are taking weight loss medication for the first time, you will start on 1.5mg and then increase your dose gradually.

Wegovy tablets dosage schedule

Based on US clinical trials, Wegovy tablets will likely be available in the UK at the following doses:

  • 1.5mg
  • 4mg
  • 9mg
  • 25mg

If you have never taken Wegovy before, you start on a dose of 1.5mg a day. You’ll then increase your dose every 30 days, as long as you and your clinician both agree it’s the right step for you. This is a process called titration and works in much the same way as for Mounjaro and Wegovy injections.

Here is an example of a dosing schedule for a new patient, taking you from 1.5mg all the way to the maximum dose of 25mg:

Dose

Duration

1.5mg once a day

Days 1 to 30

4mg once a day

Days 31 to 60

9mg once a day

Days 61 to 90

25mg once a day

Day 91 onwards

Do you always have to start at 1.5mg?

Your starting dose of Wegovy pills depends on whether you’re switching from Wegovy injections to tablets or taking the treatment for the first time.

Based on guidance from the manufacturer, Novo Nordisk:

  • If you’ve never taken Wegovy before: you will always start at the 1.5mg dose of Wegovy tablets. This so you’re slowly introduced to the medication, minimising the chance of side effects while making sure you can tolerate the treatment.
  • If you’re switching from 2.4mg injections: you’ll start at the maximum tablets dose of 25mg, 7 days after you stop taking your injections.

Novo Nordisk currently doesn’t provide guidance on switching between other doses of injections and tablets.

Does everyone have to stick to the same dosage schedule?

“No, your dosage schedule will be determined by how your body responds to the medication and what your weight loss goals are. These two factors are unique to you and your body. As a result, you are likely to have a different dosage schedule to someone else you know taking Wegovy tablets.

“For instance, you might want to spend a couple of months at a lower dose, as you feel comfortable and are losing weight at a pace you’re happy with.

“And at every turn your clinician will be there to help you make the best decision for your body.”

What is the maintenance dose for Wegovy tablets?

The manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, currently states that the maintenance dose of Wegovy tablets is the maximum 25mg a day dose. This is the dose studied during the OASIS 4 clinical trial.

Increasing your dose of Wegovy tablets

After starting on 1.5mg a day, your dose will be increased gradually, either until:

  • you reach a dose that works for you and helps you maintain your weight
  • you reach the maximum dose (25mg a day)

Your healthcare provider will decide how quickly your dose is increased, based on how well you tolerate the medicine and what effect it has on your weight.

Once you reach a dose you are happy with, you don’t have to increase any further. The goal of titration is to find a dose that works for you, not to help you reach the maximum dose, which won’t be right for everybody.

What to expect when you increase your dose

When you increase your dose of Wegovy tablets, you can expect a few things to happen:

  • the appetite suppressing effects will increase
  • you may start to see more noticeable weight loss
  • you may experience more side effects of Wegovy
  • side effects you thought had gone away may reappear

Whether or not you can tolerate these side effects will be personal to you. However, you can always drop your dose back down again if you find that a higher dose doesn’t feel right. There will always be some trial and error involved in working out what dose is right for you, finding a balance between weight loss and comfort.

You should discuss any changes in your dosage with your clinician, who will be able to guide you during this process and give you personalised advice.

Are side effects worse at higher doses of Wegovy tablets?

Research has found that higher doses tend to produce a higher risk of side effects. However, these normally resolve as your body gets used to the higher level of medication.

Common side effects include:

  • nausea
  • constipation
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • stomach pain
  • changes in skin sensations
  • headache
  • tiredness
  • upset stomach
  • dizziness
  • bloating
  • belching
  • gas
  • heartburn
  • hair loss

Frequently asked questions about Wegovy tablets dosage

Why are Wegovy tablet doses different to injections?

Wegovy tablet doses are different to Wegovy injection doses because they are absorbed by the body differently.

To work properly, Wegovy needs to be absorbed into your bloodstream. Wegovy tablets make it to your bloodstream via your digestive system. However, the injection is absorbed directly into the bloodstream, so it is absorbed by the body more easily. As a result, you need a lower dose of the injection to achieve the same effect as a higher dose of the tablet.

When should I take my Wegovy tablets?

You should take one Wegovy tablet first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Swallow the tablet whole with no more than 120ml of plain water. Do not take it with sparkling water, coffee, juice, or any other beverages other than plain water. Then, wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink anything other than water or take any other medications.

Summary of Wegovy tablet dosages

“Wegovy tablets are a great alternative to Wegovy injections, offering a different way to take your treatment while still providing the same effects.

“Because the body absorbs semaglutide from the tablets differently than Wegovy injections, the doses are a little different. Specifically, Wegovy tablet doses tend to be higher than Wegovy injections. The dose that’s right for you will depend on your individual health and weight loss goals.

“If you’re struggling to make a decision on which type of weight loss medication is right for you, you can always reach out to one of our clinicians to get personalised advice. We’ll be able to take your medical history, lifestyle and weight loss goals into account, to help you find the right solution for you.”
