How to take GLP-1 Side effects treatment

Does myBMI offer side effects treatment?

myBMI can prescribe common side effects treatments to help you on your GLP-1 weight loss journey. During your returning consultation, you can request side effects support, and a prescriber will supply you with the most suitable medication.

What side effects treatment does myBMI offer?

Here’s a list of side effects treatments that we offer:

  • Macrogol (for constipation)
  • Omeprazole (for acid reflux)
  • Loperamide (for diarrhoea)
  • Lansoprazole (for acid reflux)
  • Gaviscon Mint Chewable Tablets (for acid reflux)
  • Prochlorperazine (for nausea)

There are also some natural remedies and techniques to suppress your side effects.

How does macrogol help with constipation?

Macrogol is an oral solution you add to water or a flavoured drink. It helps with constipation from Mounjaro. It works by absorbing water to bulk up the stool, allowing it to move through the colon more easily and making it softer and easier to pass.

How to take macrogol safely

The amount of macrogol you take depends on how constipated you are. If you are unsure how much to take, ask one of our prescribers.

Mix each sachet with 125ml of water and stir well before drinking.

If you dislike the taste, adding fruit juice is fine. Never take the sachet as dry powder; always dissolve it in water. If you’re treating severe faecal impaction, you should drink plenty of extra fluids. It’s also essential to finish your full daily dose within 6 hours.

Read the macrogol patient information leaflet.

How does omeprazole help with acid reflux?

Omeprazole is a medicine that lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes. It blocks enzymes in the stomach lining, called proton pumps, which normally produce acid to help digest food.

How to safely take omeprazole

You can take omeprazole once daily in the morning or evening, with or without food. Swallow tablets or capsules whole with water or juice. If you can’t swallow capsules, you can open most types and mix the granules with a bit of water or juice.

Omeprazole does not affect your stomach so that you can take it with or without food. However, it’s always best to keep hydrated when taking any medication to allow it to travel around the body more easily.

Read the omeprazole patient information leaflet.

How does loperamide help with diarrhoea?

Loperamide is a medicine that slows down movement in the gut. This gives your body more time to absorb water from the intestines, which makes your poo firmer and reduces how often you need to use the toilet.

How to take loperamide safely

If you are prescribed loperamide for long-lasting diarrhoea, your prescriber will tell you how much to take. The usual dose is up to 8 capsules a day, starting with two capsules for the initial loose bowel movements and followed by a single capsule after each loose motion. This dose does not need to be evenly spaced throughout the day.

You can take these tablets with or without food, but you should keep hydrated.

Read the loperamide patient information leaflet.

How does lansoprazole help with acid reflux?

Lansoprazole is a medicine that reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes. It works by blocking enzymes called proton pumps, which normally help produce stomach acid for digestion.

How to safely take Lansoprazole

You usually take lansoprazole once a day, first thing in the morning. Food stops lansoprazole from being absorbed into your system, so taking it around 30 minutes before a meal (breakfast) works best.

Again, you should always keep hydrated whilst taking any medications.

Read the lansoprazole patient information leaflet.

How does Gaviscon help with acid reflux?

Gaviscon is used to relieve heartburn and indigestion. It works by forming a protective layer on top of your stomach contents, which helps prevent acid from rising into your food pipe.

How to take Gaviscon tablets safely

The tablets are chewable; you should chew thoroughly before swallowing. Although you don’t need to eat before taking this medication, it is most effective after food, as it will keep any acids your stomach produces from foods in your stomach.

You can take up to 4 tablets up to 4 times daily, after meals and before you sleep.

Read the Gaviscon patient information leaflet.

How does prochlorperazine help with nausea?

Prochlorperazine is a medicine that helps reduce nausea and vomiting. It works by blocking the effects of a chemical in the brain called dopamine. This action affects the parts of the brain that trigger feelings of sickness, helping to calm the urge to vomit and making you feel less nauseous.

How to safely take prochlorperazine

You can take prochlorperazine tablets with a drink of water or juice, with or without food; however, they are most effective if taken after meals, as they have more time to dissolve.

Read the prochlorperazine patient information leaflet.

Can I request side effects treatment?

You can request support for side effects during your consultation. Simply tell one of our prescribers what side effects you are suffering from, and we will work with you to offer you the support you need.

If you are unsure about a medication or supplement and how it will help with your side effects, always consult a medical professional or the prescriber who prescribed it.
