How long does Mounjaro take to start working?

Clinical trials have shown that you can lose up to 4% of your starting body weight within the first month of treatment! But it’s important to remember that this may not be the case for everyone. Your body may react quicker or slower to the medication.

Mounjaro Week 1
You will start your treatment on the first dose of Mounjaro, 2.5mg. Mounjaro starts to work within hours of your first injection. So, although you may not see a physical difference in the first week, the medication and your body are working hard.

Many people don’t notice physical weight loss in the first two weeks of treatment, but it’s important not to get discouraged by this.
Mounjaro Week 3
It’s important not to expect significant results at this stage, as this is the lowest dose of treatment. However, you will be able to see a difference in yourself mentally. This stage of treatment is mainly to help your body acclimatise to the treatment to avoid severe side effects as your dose increases.
Mounjaro Week 4
By week 4 of treatment, the average weight loss recorded in trials is around 4% of your starting body weight, but these results can be different in practice. At this point, you’re still on the lowest dose of treatment, and your body is still getting used to your medication.
After four weeks, the active ingredient, tirzepatide (Mounjaro), is in a consistent state in your body. So, some of the effects of Mounjaro, such as reduced appetite, will be consistent throughout the week rather than coming and going.
Now that you have started your treatment journey adequately, it’s time to increase your dose. This is an excellent time to set some weight management goals and understand that a calorie-deficit diet and a non-sedentary lifestyle are needed to get the best results from your treatment.
Adopting these habits early in your treatment is essential. When you have finished treatment and want to maintain your weight loss, you must continue these healthy habits.
Mounjaro month 2
Studies show that you can lose around 6% of your starting body weight during month 2 of treatment. Again, this is a titration dose, not meant for weight loss but to get your body used to the treatment. You will also increase your dose from 2.5mg to 5mg (providing that your prescriber thinks this is appropriate).

Mounjaro Week 5
Increasing your dose may increase any side effects you have been experiencing. Don’t worry; they usually subside once your body is used to the higher dose. At this point, you may have lost around 5% of your starting body weight (for example, if you started at 80kg, you may have lost 4kg).
Mounjaro Week 6
At week 6, you should start seeing more physical changes, such as certain body parts becoming slimmer and more toned. If you are exercising alongside your medication, you may be able to see more muscle. You may also feel some mental benefits, like better sleep and feeling more energised.
Mounjaro Week 7
For week 7, providing that you are coping well on the 5mg dose, you will continue with this strength. You should slowly get used to this dose and may find any side effects lessening. You may need to make some dietary changes to portion sizes or ingredients to further reduce side effects.
Mounjaro Week 8
At week 8, you are ready to step up your dose to 7.5 mg. Although you may have noticed slight weight loss prior to this, the majority of your body weight is lost during the following doses.
Mounjaro month 3
For most people, the 7.5mg dose of Mounjaro begins in month 3, but you can continue the 5mg dose if you wish.

You should start to see and feel the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle earlier in your treatment.
Mounjaro Weeks 10, 11 & 12
By the end of the 7.5mg dose, you may see results of up to 9% loss of body weight. To put this into perspective, if you started treatment at 80kg, you may have lost 7.2kg or nearly 16 lbs.
Mounjaro month 4
During month 4, you may either sustain your 7.5mg dose or increase your dose to 10mg. Depending on whether you choose to increase your dose, you can lose up to 11% of your starting body weight after completing the 10 mg dose.
By now, your healthy habits should have become second nature, and you shouldn’t have to push yourself as much to stick to your plan. It’s an excellent time to reflect on your progress!
Mounjaro month 5
At month 5, you can stay on your 10mg dose or increase it to 12.5mg. Again, increasing strength may increase your side effects, but after some time, your body should get used to this, and it will lessen.
Trials during month 5 have shown that you could have lost up to 12% of your starting body weight! To put this into perspective, if you started treatment at 80kg, you could have lost 9.6kg (that’s 21lbs!)
Mounjaro month 6 and onwards – How much weight can you lose in a month with Mounjaro?
For month 6, you can either continue on the 12.5mg dose or increase the strength to the final dose of 15mg. Although this is the last dose, your treatment does not have to end here. It’s suggested that you undergo treatment with Mounjaro for an entire year to see the treatment’s full benefits.
If your prescriber thinks this is safe for you, you can sustain the 15mg for as long as necessary to reach the 12-month mark. If you have reached a healthy weight and BMI, our prescribers may recommend that you sustain the 5mg dose of Mounjaro until you are ready to stop treatment and maintain a healthy diet and exercise plan.
Trials have shown that you could lose 21% of your starting body weight by the end of month 18. To put this into perspective, if you started treatment at 80kg, you could have lost up to 16.8kg, or 37lbs!
Maintaining weight after Mounjaro
To maintain your weight loss after Mounjaro, you should maintain the healthy habits you started at the start of your treatment journey. Stay on a calorie-deficit diet and maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
Again, you can continue your treatment for as long as you and your prescriber think necessary, but if it’s done right, you shouldn’t need to! Learning to stay healthy while undergoing weight loss treatment is extremely important when ending treatment to ensure that your hard work is not reversed.
