Wegovy: the key details

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a weekly injection prescribed to adults with a BMI of 30 or above to help them lose weight. It may also be suitable for those with a BMI over 27 who also have obesity-related complications such as prediabetes or high blood pressure.

It’s designed for people who have previously struggled to lose weight through diet, exercise or lifestyle changes.

How does the ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, work?

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, helps you lose weight by increasing your feelings of fullness, reducing hunger, and reducing your cravings for high-fat food.

It works as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, mimicking the GLP-1 hormone released in the gut in response to eating.

It stimulates the production of insulin in your pancreas and helps to reduce the production of the hormone glucagon.

By reducing your appetite, semaglutide makes it easier to stick to a calorie-controlled diet.

Are there different doses of Wegovy?

There are 5 different doses of Wegovy. When you begin treatment, your prescriber will start you off on the lowest dose before gradually increasing it (this is called titration).

A gradual increase in the dosage helps the body adjust to the medication and minimises the chances of side effects.

This is the lowest dose available for weekly injections, and you’ll usually start by taking this for the first 4 weeks.

The main purpose of starting on the lowest dose is to avoid experiencing any severe side effects, so please don’t be disheartened if you don’t see much movement on the scales whilst you’re taking 0.25mg.

Some people do start to see some weight loss even on this lowest dose.

Taking 0.25mg injections weekly for the first month of treatment means that your body will be allowed to gradually get used to the medication before you titrate up to a higher dose.

From weeks 5-8, most people move onto a 0.5mg injection every week.

Although this still isn’t the therapeutic dose, remember that this is still a titration period to allow your body a chance to adjust to treatment.

You should take the 0.5mg dose weekly throughout your second month of treatment.

From week 9, you’ll be able to take the full weekly dose of 1.0mg.

For most people, this is enough to start seeing results, and many people who take weekly injections for weight loss stay at this dosage for as long as they need to.

You shouldn’t ever take 1.0mg straight away without titrating up from a lower dose, as this could cause severe side effects.

The Sustain plan is suitable for people who have been taking the 1.0mg dose for a while and have either reached a plateau or stopped seeing as much success as expected.

Your prescriber will make the final decision about whether or not a surge plan would be appropriate for you, and if so, how long you should stay on it.

The Surge maintenance plan is perfect for people who have reached their goal weight with Wegovy and want to maintain it without losing or gaining a significant amount more.

How effective is Wegovy?

When used alongside a low-calorie diet and exercise, Wegovy is highly effective at helping people achieve their weight loss goals.

When Wegovy was used for 12 months, alongside lifestyle support and a reduced-calorie diet, people lost, on average, around 15% of their body weight[1]

How long does Wegovy take to work?

Most patients notice a reduced appetite and increased feelings of fullness within a few days of starting Wegovy. However, the scales might take a few weeks to show weight loss. Some people may see some weight loss in the first 4 weeks of treatment[1].

Unfortunately, we cannot give a set time frame for how long it will take before you notice results; it depends on multiple factors, including the dosage, your lifestyle, starting weight, and medical history.

Will I regain weight after stopping Wegovy?

If you continue to follow a reduced-calorie diet and exercise regularly once you stop taking Wegovy, you should be able to maintain your weight loss. Hopefully, you will have formed lifelong lifestyle habits.

Conversely, you can expect to regain weight if you start consuming more calories and reducing your exercise.

Wegovy directions

When to inject Wegovy

You should inject Wegovy once a week on the same day. You can inject it at any time of the day, but we advise that you inject it at the same time so that you remember.

If you need to change the day you inject Wegovy, that’s fine! However, you must wait at least 3 days (72 hours) between each dose.

How to inject Wegovy

Before injecting yourself, thoroughly wash your hands to reduce the risk of an infection at the injection site.

Check the pen to ensure there is no sign of damage, that the medication is clear and colourless and that it hasn’t passed its expiry date.

Your healthcare provider will help you choose the best injection site for you. It is usually injected into your thighs, lower stomach or arms. You can inject it into the same body area each week, as long as it’s not in the exact same spot.

Pull the cap straight off your pen and push the pen firmly against your skin. Keep applying pressure until the yellow bar has stopped moving.

You will hear two clicks during the injection. The first click means the injection has started, and the second click means the injection is ongoing.

Once the yellow bar has stopped moving, the injection is complete.

After injecting Wegovy

It’s normal to see blood after administering the injection. Press lightly using gauze or a cotton pad to stop the bleeding.

Do not rub the injection site.

Disposing of your Wegovy pen & needles

As soon as you have injected your medication, you must safely dispose of your needle.

Unscrew the needle from the pen and dispose of it using a sharps bin, preventing injury or cross-contamination. You should never try to put the inner cap back on, as this could cause injury to yourself.

After using your last dose of your monthly pen, you can dispose of your empty pen in your regular household waste.

What if I’ve injected too much Wegovy?

If you have injected too much Wegovy, then you must seek medical advice immediately. You must know that injecting more Wegovy than you have been prescribed will not cause you to lose more weight.

If you accidentally inject more Wegovy, then you are likely to experience unwanted side effects such as dizziness and digestive issues.

Other medicines and Wegovy

If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, speak to your healthcare provider before using this product.

Can I take Wegovy while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Do not use Wegovy if you are pregnant, as it is unknown if this medicine will affect your unborn child. If you wish to become pregnant, stop using Wegovy two months before trying to get pregnant.

If you become pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must tell your healthcare provider straight away, and your treatment will be stopped.

It is recommended that you use contraception while on Wegovy.

Do not use Wegovy if you are breastfeeding. It is unknown if the medicine passes into your breast milk.

Is Wegovy suitable for any age?

This medication is unsuitable for anyone under 18 years old.

Food, drink and alcohol with Wegovy

You can use Wegovy with or without food and drink. If you feel sick after administering Wegovy, you might choose to eat before you inject to get the nutrients you need.

Your Wegovy diet should include high-protein foods, fibre, and healthy fats. Limit the amount of foods you eat that contain saturated fats, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates. You don’t need to cut anything out; just ensure you stick to a balanced diet.

You should limit your alcohol consumption during your Wegovy treatment as it has the potential to worsen some of your side effects.

Alcohol is also high in calories and can hinder your weight loss progress, meaning that Wegovy may not be as effective if you are drinking alcohol. It can also lead to dehydration and disrupt your sleep.

As alcohol can lower blood sugar levels, it can be dangerous and lead to hypoglycemia. If you have diabetes, it’s especially important to be cautious with alcohol consumption. Monitor your blood glucose levels regularly to track the risk of low blood sugar.

Storing Wegovy

Keep this medicine out of sight and reach of children.

Do not use this medicine after the expiration date, as stated on the pen label and the carton after ‘EXP’. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.

Store in a refrigerator between 2°C–8°C. Do not freeze the pen. Store it in its original packaging to protect it from light.

You can store Wegovy out of the refrigerator below 30°C for up to 42 days. After that, you must discard it.
